In less than three months since the unveiling of the permanent Medication Collection Box, the Laconia Police Department has collected 126 pounds of unused or expired medications. This voluntary collection and disposal process is free and anonymous.

The term chronic is typically applied when the course of the disease lasts for more than three months. This can include arthritis, chronic pain, asthma, obesity, osteoporosis, diabetes, heart disease and other conditions that you live with on a daily or weekly basis, which significantly limit day-to-day activities. Laconia Clinic Internal Medicine, a department of Lakes Region General Hospital, is pleased to now offer Saturday morning appointments for adult patients. Physicals, routine care, sick visits and follow up visits may now be scheduled for Saturdays. Laboratory, x-ray and pharmacy services are also available during the new Saturday office hours.

The month of March is National Colorectal Awareness Month. Colorectal Cancer is cancer that occurs in the colon or rectum and is the second leading cancer killer in the United States. But it doesn’t have to be! If everyone aged 50 years or older had regular screening tests, at least 60% of deaths from this cancer could be avoided according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

Laconia Clinic employees joined together once again for their Annual Craft & Bake Sale held in mid-November. A variety of desserts were created by employees of the various departments within the Clinic to raise money for the St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantry in Laconia. Proceeds from the craft & bake sale were presented to the food pantry in early January to assist with the restocking of the food pantry after the busy holiday season. This year’s donation was for $634 and was the Laconia Clinic’s fifth year of donating to the food pantry.

The Tanger Outlet Center in Tilton raised and is donating $35,875.44 for the battle against breast cancer. During this season of hope and giving, Tanger made its local donation to LRGHealthcare during a special ceremony on Thursday, December 13, 2012 at Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia.

The Building Healthy Communities talk with transportation, planning and public health consultant Mark Fenton on November 2 was very well received with over 90 prominent Lakes Region men and women in attendance. LRGHealthcare recently obtained two capillary blood lead level testing machines for use in both Westside Family Practice in Franklin and Newfound Family Practice in Bristol. The machines were purchased through a combined effort between LRGHealthcare and a grant from the New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority (NHHFA) as part of an initiative of the Franklin-Newfound Area Healthy Homes Committee (a committee of the local public health network, Caring Community Network of the Twin Rivers).

New physicians, advanced medical training and surgical procedures, and customer service initiatives have led Orthopedic Professional Association, in partnership with LRGHealthcare to update their name to Advanced Orthopaedic Specialists.

LRGHealthcare is pleased to offer aquatic exercise and fitness activities ranging from Arthritis Foundation classes to strength and conditioning classes. Exercise classes in the therapeutic warm water pool can include walking, jogging, jumping, swimming, kicking, and other recurring activities that improve mobility and cardiovascular function. Some soldiers cannot talk to their families because of assignment or location, but there are soldiers who do not call home simply because they cannot afford the cost to make the call.

Join LRGHealthcare for a free four month Athletic Performance Series designed to assist the coach, athlete, or recreational athlete in developing sports-specific skills to improve overall fitness. Individuals are welcome to attend one or all of the programs.

Join LRGHealthcare experts for a free presentation to learn ways to reduce high blood pressure through nutrition, exercise, medication, stress and lifestyle changes on Tuesday, March 20 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Lakes Region General Hospital. Free blood pressure screenings will also be available prior to the presentation from 5:30–6:00 p.m.

A diagnosis of breast cancer can be scary, but women do not have to go it alone. A support group can help. The LRGHealthcare Breast Cancer & Beyond support group meets regularly and brings women together to share experiences and advice.

LRGHealthcare recently completed a Healthcare Needs Assessment. The process included hosting, Key Informant Focus Groups, as well as offering a public survey. The information collected will be used to help prioritize the programs and services offered to the community.

The Power Golf Program offers a full body conditioning clinic that emphasizes the muscles needed specifically for golf. The program includes simple stretching tips to minimize golf related injuries, to exercises that physically prepare you for the upcoming golf season.

Good News! The Better Choices, Better Health program presented by LRGHealthcare will be offered in TWO locations this winter. This workshop is for people with chronic conditions or any long-term health issue, and is also open to caregivers who want to feel better by living healthier lives.

Our Breast Cancer and Beyond support program is hosting a gathering for women who have faced a breast cancer diagnosis on Monday, January 16, 2012 from 4:30-6:00 p.m.
