The LRGHealthcare Family Birthplace is now offering new parents the Period of PURPLE Crying® education program.
The program, developed by the National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome, offers ways to understand a time in a babys life between 2 weeks and 5 months when the amount of time a baby cries increases. Crying can last up to 5 hours a night for some infants. Each letter in the word PURPLE stands for a different feature of this developmental stage. Nurses in the Family Birthplace review information about the Period of PURPLE Crying with each parent after the birth of their baby.
"Caring for a crying infant can be a challenge, and new parents need to understand that it is okay to put an infant down in a safe place and walk away if they become frustrated," explained LRGHealthcare Director of Family Birthplace Ruth O'Hara.
Shaken baby syndrome, also known as abusive head trauma, is a very dangerous form of abuse in children under the age of one. Frustration with crying is the most common noted stimulus for shaking a baby, as well as other abuse of infants. The program, offered in partnership with the New Hampshire Childrens Trust is a statewide initiative to eliminate abuse and neglect to children.
LRGHealthcare is also participating in a public awareness campaign, CLICK for Babies. This grassroots initiative involves placing a purple cap on a newborn to remind parents about the Period of PURPLE Crying, and the danger of shaking a baby.
Click for Babies is actively recruiting volunteers to knit and crochet purple colored baby caps, and the New Hampshire Childrens Trust has set a goal of collecting 1,000 purple caps for the 2012 campaign. There are several collection sites throughout the state, including LRGHealthcare. If you would like to volunteer your time and talent, please visit www.CLICKforBabies.org for more information.
