Toasting Achievement of Reaching Capital Campaign Goal

LACONIA —With the clink of champagne glasses and effusive thanks to all donors, LRGHealthcare on Thursday celebrated the success of its $4 million and counting “Strengthening the Community’s Well-Being” Capital Campaign.

Launched in March 2012, the focus of the effort, according to LRGHealthcare, which is the non-profit parent of Lakes Region General and Franklin Regional hospitals, is to convert existing inpatient rooms to single patient rooms with private bathrooms and showers, family sleep sofas and patient-lift systems. Studies have found that patients sleep better and heal faster in private rooms, said LRGHealthcare, which also noted that the capital campaign would pay for a new endoscopy suite at LRGH, to update medical-imaging equipment at FRH and LRGH and to expand the Emergency departments at both facilities.

Paul Racicot, MD, and Gil Schohan, who co-chaired the LRGHealthcare capital campaign, announced that their mission was accomplished but that the fundraising was continuing. Racicot thanked Bank of New Hampshire, Franklin Savings Bank and Meredith Village Savings Bank for their support.

Schohan and Tom Clairmont, who is the president of LRGHealthcare, also thanked LRGHealthcare employees who stepped up as soon as the capital campaign was announced. Clairmont said the effort to convert inpatient rooms at LRGH to single-patient rooms is ongoing although it has been delayed due to what he called some “crimped” finances caused by the hospital having to bear an unanticipated tax burden.

Nonetheless, Clairmont proclaimed the capital campaign and the good that it will do “a great endeavor” whose progress has moved forward, for the most part, “without a hitch.” Many donors “stepped up,” he said, and their generosity is very much appreciated. “This,” Clairmont said while standing in the atrium of the reconfigured lobby at LRGH that was part of a 97,000-square-foot addition at LRGH that also included a new and expanded Intensive Care and Senior Service Services units and a new power plant, “is your community resource.”

This is “Hospital Week” in America, Clairmont told his guests, adding that earlier in the day Thursday he spoke to staff at LRGH about that fact, pointing out that “You can’t do what you do here without being proud.” The entire staff, he summed up, “and this community makes us proud.”
