Prostate cancer affects about one in six men. Luckily, you can take measures that may reduce your risk or slow the progression of the disease. There’s evidence that eating certain foods may significantly reduce a man’s risk, so be sure to include these eight powerful prostate protectors in your diet:
Pomegranate. This fruit’s juice has been shown in lab studies to reduce tumor cell growth, thanks to the abundance of antioxidants in every bite.
Broccoli. Studies have found that men who eat broccoli have gene changes known to play a role in battling cancer. Broccoli contains a powerful antioxidant called sulforaphane, which provides added cancer-fighting power.
Tomatoes. Tomatoes, both raw and cooked, are loaded with an antioxidant called lycopene that may help lower your prostate cancer risk.
Garlic. Some of the best flavor enhancers—garlic, onions and chives—can also reduce your risk of prostate cancer. The foods contain flavonoids that have been shown to reduce tumor growth in some laboratory studies.
Fruit. It’s full of vitamin C, which has been linked to a lower cancer risk, so eat plenty of fruit to help reduce your risk.
Tea. The antioxidants in tea, especially green tea, are powerful cancer fighters. Studies show that tea lowers the levels of polyamines, substances linked with cancer malignancy.
Red wine. Drinking four or more glasses a week could cut the risk of prostate cancer in half. Red wine has the greatest impact on the most aggressive, fast-spreading prostate tumors. Be sure to drink in moderation, though. For men, that’s no more than two drinks a day.
Fish. Salmon, tuna, sardines, herring and other fatty fish contain omega-3 fatty acids, which have great potential for preventing cancer.
