It’s no surprise that cancer takes a heavy toll on relationships. In fact, nearly
12 percent of marriages end in separation or divorce after a spouse develops cancer. In research published in the journal Cancer, investigators studied more than 500 patients with cancer or multiple sclerosis from 2001 to 2006. They found that couples were six times more likely to split when the wife had cancer than when the husband became ill. Researchers suggest healthcare providers watch for signs of marital discord and help direct couples to counseling.
