Breast density key to recurrent disease

Women with dense breast tissue are more likely to get breast cancer, and now experts say these women are at higher risk for a recurrence of their cancer in the same breast. According to a report in the journal Cancer, researchers looked at 335 women who underwent lumpectomy for invasive breast cancer and tracked them for 10 years. They found that women with the most dense breasts had the highest recurrence rate (21 percent), compared to women with the lowest density, who had a 5 percent recurrence rate. Whether or not the women had radiation was a factor, too. Those with highly dense breasts who skipped radiation had a recurrence rate of 40 percent. But none of the women in the low density group who skipped radiation saw their cancer return.
