5 ways to turn off your baby’s tears

Swaddling. Tightly wrapping baby mimics the womb and calms him or her.

Side-lying. Holding baby on the side or stomach can shut off the “Moro reflex”—a startled response to his or her own cry.

Shushing. Loud shushing mimics the sound of blood flowing through the placenta and calms baby. The louder he or she cries, the louder the shushing should be.

Swinging. Slowly swinging baby can help soothe agitation.

Sucking. A breast, a finger or a pacifier can also calm things down. Sucking can often stop a cry midscream.
