If you have had breast cancer, you would probably do anything to prevent it from recurring. One important measure may be quite simple—reduce your dietary fat.
Researchers studied nearly 2,500 women with early-stage breast cancer who underwent surgery and then radiation, chemotherapy and/or tamoxifen therapy as needed. Half the women followed a low-fat diet (averaging 33.3 daily grams of fat, about half the standard diet) and attended regular sessions with a nutritionist.
After five years, the dietary group had fewer cancer recurrences (9.8 percent) than the control group (12.4 percent). The results were even more striking in women who had estrogen-related cancers. These women had a 42 percent lower risk of recurrence, presumably because dietary fat influences estrogen levels.
